TECHNICAL GUIDES

Black Walnut Properties and Specification Selection

American black walnut (Juglans nigra) is valued for colour, grain and reliable machining, but a sound specification must separate hardness, density, shrinkage, moisture condition and lumber grade. This guide follows the material from logs to fresh-sawn boards and then to kiln-dried edged stock.

1. Start with the property data, not a single “hardness” label

USDA Forest Products Laboratory data list black walnut side hardness at about 1,010 lbf (4,492 N) at 12% moisture content, average weight at about 38 lb/ft³ (609 kg/m³), and specific gravity at 0.55 at 12% moisture content. These values describe different behaviours: hardness is resistance to indentation; density affects weight and many mechanical properties; neither value alone predicts movement as moisture changes.

Radial shrinkage, green to ovendry5.5%Consider movement across the radius and growth-ring orientation.
Tangential shrinkage, green to ovendry7.8%Allow for greater movement tangential to the rings.

2. Shrinkage is the key link between sawing and final dimensions

USDA data give average green-to-ovendry shrinkage of about 5.5% radially and 7.8% tangentially for black walnut. Tangential movement is therefore greater than radial movement, which is why growth-ring orientation, board width, thickness and drying quality matter when assessing cup, bow and final machining allowance. These are species averages, not guaranteed values for an individual board.

3. Fresh-sawn boards are an intermediate condition

Fresh surfaces reveal heartwood, pale sapwood, grain direction, knots, checks and wane, but colour and dimensions will change during drying and subsequent surfacing. At this stage, record actual thickness and width, identify end checks and reaction wood, and plan recovery. Do not treat a green-board measurement as the final dressed dimension.

4. Moisture content must be written into the purchase specification

Kiln drying should be controlled with a schedule suited to species and thickness; a universal temperature-and-time recipe is not appropriate for every kiln, board thickness or starting condition. Acceptance should state the target moisture-content range, test method, sampling plan and permitted variation within and between boards. Final target moisture content should match the expected service environment, and the stock should be allowed to equalize and acclimatize before precision machining.

5. NHLA grade and engineering performance answer different questions

NHLA hardwood grades primarily classify the amount and size of clear cuttings obtainable from a board. They do not certify Janka hardness, bending strength, colour match or moisture content. A practical purchase order should therefore state the commercial grade together with thickness, width and length basis, surfacing condition, moisture requirements, warp limits, sapwood or heartwood expectations, colour range, defect agreement, tally method and inspection procedure.

6. Translate the data into a machining decision

Black walnut is generally regarded as easy to work and capable of a good finish, but feed speed, cutter geometry and depth of cut must be set for the actual machine, tool diameter, number of cutting edges, stock thickness, grain direction and required surface quality. Use a trial piece from the production batch, check for tear-out, burnishing and dimensional movement, then lock the process settings.
